Newcastle+Maitland两日游(2)

猎人谷,Hunter Valley,分为两部分,Lower Hunter Valley可以通过火车前往,Higher Hunter Valley就更加内陆,需要开车或者乘坐长途客运巴士(Coach)才能去到。猎人谷最出名的是葡萄酒,但其实更为重要的经济物资却是煤。我们沿路经过,可以看到火车载着一车车的煤奔往Newcastle。

酒我们没太大兴趣,而且依靠公共交通,只能去到Lower Hunter Valley。这次主要的目的是参观Maitland,先是看Maitland Market(在这里买了当地农民产的蜂蜜),然后逛Maitland的主要街道High Street。

Maitland是盛极一时的大镇,是当时澳洲的第二大镇。从结实又华丽的建筑就可以看到当年的风采。但如今的Maitland,走在街上人烟稀少,有种鬼城的感觉–周围都很华丽很辉煌,但却鲜少看到有人。在1880s开始,Maitland(当时的West Maitland)由私人集资建起,是猎人谷及更内陆地区的出货口。人们从各地赶来,将货物搁在这里的大仓库,然后货物从仓库搬到船上,通过船只从猎人河(Hunter River)运到海口,也就是Newcastle。但后来Newcastle建了铁路,又发展了更大的船只,经济的依托从河运转移到海运。又因为猎人谷老是洪水泛滥,不少人破产被迫离开这片土地。像今天的强台风,对猎人谷造成很大的破坏,如今仍在修复中,这个月的Market的费用减低,鼓励人们在洪水灾害后出售自己的二手物品。

虽然河运重要性降低,但是Hunter River 依然是猎人谷的支柱。河流虽然会泛滥,但是滋润了沿途的农庄、葡萄园,没有了河流,就没有猎人谷。在《The Hunter : paddling through time along a great Australian river》一书中,作者Scott Bevan撑着独木舟,沿着Hunter Valley去探访关于猎人谷的历史、人们的生活和以后的展望。

猎人谷是重要的,也是美丽的。我会在以后陆续将猎人谷这些镇都探一遍。
